Hi, my name is Phil. I have just finished my four day work experience at borwell, which has been extremely educational. I was firstly introduced to the team and given a tour of the site which was a nice way to make me feel more comfortable rather than just being thrown in room with a group of strangers in a strange place.
I was seated between software engineers and one of them was giving me direction. The software engineer assigned me a project that he thought I would be able to manage based on my experience, and suggested that I use the language C#, which I had never used before. This made the project seem scary at first but I was quickly made aware that I was surrounded by experts that were all willing to help me.
My director took a lot of time to help me through various stages of the project and helped me break it down into smaller, more manageable tasks as well as showing me resources that can help me familiarize with the syntax of C#. My work experience at borwell allowed me to meet and work with people at all levels.
I was also given a demonstration of a few of the projects that borwell are currently working on. This was a real eye opener for me because it showed me just how much work goes into being a software engineer and how much the team depends on each other to create such intricate yet robust programs.
This has been a great experience for me. One of the things I have learned during my work experience at borwell, is that being in the environment of software engineers can’t really be taught in the classroom. I feel this was an important step into a career that I am now confident I want to pursue.
Phil.
